Gazania Daybreak Mixed

Gazania, commonly referred to as treasure flowers, is a vibrant and hardy plant that thrives in sunny locations and well-drained soil conditions. These plants are renowned for their large, radiant flowers that come in a delightful array of colours. You can expect to see shades of yellow, orange, red, gold, white, and purple, often complemented by attractive markings and subtly blushing petals that add an extra touch of charm to their appearance.

These treasure flowers are incredibly versatile and can enhance the aesthetic appeal of various outdoor spaces. They look particularly striking when planted in containers, adding a pop of colour to your patio or balcony. Gazanias also work well on slopes, where their bright flowers can create a stunning visual impact. In addition, they can be used to add depth and interest to flower beds and borders, or serve as an attractive ground cover, spreading their cheerful blooms across your garden.

One interesting fact about Gazanias is their resemblance to daisies. This is because they both belong to the same plant family, Asteraceae. However, Gazanias have their own unique characteristics that set them apart. They are free-flowering plants, meaning they produce a generous amount of flowers throughout their growing season. But what's even more impressive is that they can produce an even greater number of flowers if they are deadheaded regularly. This simple gardening practice can encourage more blooms to grow, ensuring your garden remains vibrant and colourful for longer.

The flowering period for Gazanias typically runs from June to September. During these months, you can expect your garden to be filled with the cheerful and bright blooms of these treasure flowers, creating a truly enchanting outdoor space.

  • How To Grow

Gazania are best planted in well-drained soil of loam and sand within an acidic, neutral and alkaline PH balance. You should plant Gazania during the spring. After planting you should keep the soil moist until you see new growth appear. Gazania are best positioned in an area of full sun where they will thrive to optimum effect. Once Gazania are better established they are relatively drought tolerant although care should be given in extreme and prolonged periods of dry weather. If water is required, this should be undertaken in the morning as Gazania are prone to powdery mildew and root rot if the plants have been wet for too long. Pinch fading flowers to encourage a prolonged flowering period and prune annually during late winter and early spring, cutting to around 3 inches off the ground. Gazania should be fed after pruning during its second season of growth alongside a thorough bout of watering.
